Write a letter from the future you to help your money goals

Imagine na it’s exactly five years from today. Na-achieve mo na ang financial goals mo, possibly including being debt-free or owning a house. Sumulat ka ng letter to the previous you, who may have been struggling, saying na with discipline you’ve finally reached your goal.

Para hindi overwhelming, the letter can just be simple, stating one goal like saving a specific amount, paying off a loan, or making your first investment.

Check out this sample letter:

Kapag may clear vision ka na ng gusto mong marating, it’s time to bridge the gap between today and that future.

Writing or visualizing that letter is just the first step. Dahil alam mo na ang gusto mong mangyari, pwedeng maging mas motivated ka to make better choices.

Turn your letter into action

Here are some tips to write that letter and use it as a daily guide to make your goals a reality:

  • Set your financial goals: Treat “achievements” as your to-do list. That is your actual action plan. To guide you with how to set goals, read this article.

  • Create a timeframe: Kung nakalagay sa letter na debt-free ka na in five years, break it down to small, achievable goals. Set a specific timeframe for your current steps, whether it’s in weeks, months, or even years.

  • Hold on to the sensory details: Isipin mo ulit kung ano ang ginagawa mo sa future and what financial stress you no longer feel by that time.

  • Make it easy to see: Ilagay ang letter sa isang lugar kung saan madalas mo ‘tong makikita (like your vanity dresser or workstation).

  • Affirm your current self: Always be kind and compassionate to yourself. I-remind ang sarili mo na it’s alright to fail as long as you are pushing to learn.

Other than writing a letter from your future self, marami pang paraan para ma-visualize ang iyong financial goals. Kung mas visual ka o mahilig ka sa arts and crafts, a vision-to-action board may also work for you!
